Tired of his strenuous life, Emperor Charles I of Spain and V of Germany decided he wanted to forget about the world and chose to retreat in Yuste, in the Spanish province of Caceres. He ordered to have a palace built there in which to spend the last days of his life.
The monastery belongs to the order of St. Jeronimo, and the monks have at present the custody of both the Monastery and the Emperor’s Palace.
